Seeking Sweetness: Daily Snapshot, Andy Warhol Cupcake Meets Andy Warhol Statue

CakeSpy Note: if you follow me on facebook or Twitter, you probably know I'm partial to adding bits of sweetness to my daily surroundings, via sidewalk chalk, small cutouts, and the like--I call it "gentle street art". Here's where I post a daily feel-good photo, for no particular reason other than to showcase these sweet little nothings, in hopes that they'll make you smile.

This time, Cuppie got to meet one of my sweetest artistic inspirations: Andy Warhol! This statue is fairly new in Union Square in NYC, close to one of Warhol's Factory locations. I think they like each other.

Cake Byte: CakeSpy and Rampage Toys Art Collaboration

Um, OMG. You know how that totally sweet art show with Rampage Toys is coming up at CakeSpy Shop?

Well, there are going to be some collaborative pieces done by Mr. Rampage (Jon) and Mlle. Spy (Jessie)--we are combining our cupcake awesomeness on two very special pieces, one of which is pictured at the top of this post! If you believe what Jon says, it says "Forbidden Love" below the image.

Here's the 411 on the show:

This show will showcase paintings and toys from Seattle based character designer Jon Malmstedt - RAMPAGE TOYS!  Jon's work focuses on fun and colorful creatures that just so happen to be monsters.  Expect scenes of urban destruction a' la the classic films 'Godzilla' and 'Mothra', but with a bent in the direction of silly - instead of Godzilla think 'giant cupcake that has no arms.' The show will include paintings, custom vinyl toys, handcast resin figures and a couple collaborative pieces done with the Cakespy herself - something for anyone who loves monsters, cupcakes, monster cupcakes or all of the above!

The reception will be on Thursday, May 12, 5-8 p.m. at CakeSpy Shop, 415 E. Pine St., Seattle WA 98122. Shop for Jon's work in advance here.

Sweet Poem: Butter by Andrea Cohen

Dear readers: it is now time for me to share with you the most beautiful poem I have read, possibly ever, but definitely this week. It is entitled Butter and was written by a brilliant soul called Andrea Cohen. It's as if this poem was written for me, about me, to me, and from within me.

It was so motivating, actually, that I did the above illustration, inspired by it, and straight from my butter soul. Here is the poem:

Butter by Andrea Cohen

I’ve never seen the land
of milk and honey, but at

the Iowa State Fair I glimpsed
a cow fashioned of butter.

It lived behind a window
in an icy room, beneath klieg lights.

I filed past as one files
past a casket at a wake.

It was that sad: a butter cow
without a butter calf. Nearby I spied

a butter motorcycle, motorcycle-
sized, a mechanical afterthought

I thought the cow might have liked to ride.
You don’t drive a motorcycle; you ride it.

But not if you’re a butter cow, not
if you’re a butter cow who’s seen, if

not the land of milk and honey, the land
of milk, and dwelled within it.

It had a short life span, the butter cow.
Before it died, I looked

deep into its butter eyes. It saw
my butter soul. I could

have wept, or spread myself,
for nobody, across dry toast.

This was taken amidst the lovely old buildings on Pike Street by the Pike Place Market, which at this time of year is dotted with beautiful cherry blossoms. Of course, when I see pink cherry blossoms, it reminds me of my other favorite pink-hued thing: frosting! Here's the world through cupcake-vision.

Cake Byte: Rampage Toys Art Show at CakeSpy Shop in May

Like, OMG. CakeSpy Shop is already sweet, but Capitol Hill's sweetest little spot is about to get a heaping dose of awesome overload.

That's right: Jon Malmstedt (you may know him as the evil genius behind Rampage Toys) is having an art show at the store in May!

Entitled 'Monsters, Cupcakes and Monster Cupcakes', here's the 411 from Jon:

Oh, and need we mention that actual, real, edible and delicious CUPCAKES will be in attendance?  YUMMY!!!

...and in this case, I think we can all agree that this parking lot is far awesomer through my eyes.

Batter Chatter: Interview with Sweet Artist Phuong Diep

So, you already know Cake Gumshoe Phuong as an ace reporter on the ways of sweet things to eat in Boston--she's reported on several Beantown bakeries in the past.
But what you might not know is that she's an artist too--a photographer specializing in photos that reflect her love of dessert, travel, and all things sweet and cute, under the name Little Random Happiness (there's a blog, btw). Want to hear more? Thought so. Interview time:
So, Little Random Happiness. Tell me baby, what's your story? I’ve always wanted to start my own business but can never pinpoint on what it should be. I love too many things…photography, baking, making jewelry, and anything else that might be striking my fancy. After working as a Marketing Project Manager for a few years, I decided to save up, quit my job, and travel before taking the plunge at starting a business. I really wanted to open a small bakery but had no experience in that field so I decided to work for one. I was fortunate enough to work for Joanne Chang at Flour Bakery. (Btw, if you haven’t bought her book yet, please do! It’s awesome!) I learned so much by working there. It really helped me understand the business. Unfortunately the right location hasn’t showed up yet so my bakery plan is on hold.

In the meantime, I finally started a blog this year and really love being able to share all the photos I’ve taken over the years. My photos really reflect my love for traveling, desserts, and cute things. They always make me smile. On a whim, I decided to apply to sell my photos at Boston’s SoWa open market this year and was accepted! I’m so thrilled! I used to go there and thought how wonderful it is to be able to do what you love and at the same time make a little bit of income. This will keep me busy for now :)

Cake or pie? Definitely cake! I can never resist a slice of cake. Plus, they get to dress up in pretty frosting.

Pants or skirts? Pants are so much more versatile.

Yes or no? Maybe? It’s nice to have a little bit of time to think before giving a definite answer!

Vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry? Vanilla…sometimes the simplest flavor is the hardest to execute and get right because it’s so subtle. That or I’m just trying to cover up how boring I am...

What product in your store are you most excited about right now? I love all of my photos but my absolute favorite right now has to be Mr. Mustachio and his tourist friend. I took it when I was in Paris last year and love how it came out. It’s almost too cute to look at.

What is the last delicious thing you ate? I’ve been obsessed with macarons every since my first trip to Paris. I seek them out everywhere. Recently I decided to try and make them myself. After a few batches, I’m proud to say that I no longer need to buy macarons until I go to Paris again :)

Any plans to start selling in stores? Not yet but I would love to if the right opportunity arises.

Please, tell us something I might not know about or expect of you. Surprise us. I am known for my sweet tooth but sometimes I do lose it. It doesn’t happen a lot but I could go for months without having a sweet treat (gasp!). When it comes back though, it comes back with a vengeance.

What is next for you and your business? I will be at SoWa open market throughout the summer. Please stop by if you are in Boston. It’s such a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon; browsing and looking at all the wonderful things being sold by different talented vendors. My photos are also on sale at etsy. I will continue to search for a bakery location and promise to let you know if there is any good news!

Seeking Sweetness: Daily Snapshot, CakeSpy is a Menace to Banana Republic

So, you guys, I will have you know that I have revisited the scene of this crime. No, I don't have an unhealthy obsession with Banana Republic--they don't even have much in my size there. But, the name is easy to make sweeter, and I do love the building in which it resides.

Hoppy Easter: Carrot Cake Truffles Recipe for Serious Eats

How do you capture the Easter Bunny?

Not with carrots, that's for sure: way too healthy, and if there's one life lesson that holds true, it's that you catch more flies with honey.

That is to say, try your luck with these little nuggets of delight known as Carrot Cake Truffles, inspired by the basic cake pop recipe from my bloggy BFF Bakerella. Comprised of dense carrot cake mixed with cream cheese to form a decadent filling, a coating of high-quality white chocolate adds a sweet finish, making for a hoppy, er, happy eating experience. Even if you don't capture the Easter Bunny, your happiness is pretty much guaranteed.

This time, I thought I'd make a flight less grueling and a little sweeter for the next person to grace seat 31F on the plane I just flew back to Seattle from NYC, so I left a little love note. I know it would make my day to find something like this, so I hope it makes someone else's day!

Master-Peeps Theatre: Mondrian Peeps

The best part about Easter? Messing around with the candy, of course. There are so many things you can make happen with the sweet treats that proliferate around this time of year--make S'meeps (that's Peeps S'mores), create dessert taco plates with rice pudding and jellybean "rice and beans"; you can make Cadbury Creme Deviled Eggs.

But it's also fun to add a bit of high culture to your candy-eating, and so I present this Mondrian-inspired Peeps creation. Filled in with black jellybean outlines around Peeps, marshmallows, and various other candies to fill in the gaps, this was as fun to make as it will be to eat.

My favorite part, of course, is the Peeps that are torn in half to fit in certain sections. I will tell the truth, it was gratifying to rip them apart.

If you like Peeps art, you might also enjoy the Starry Night one I made a few years ago:

Happy Easter Season!

Cake Byte: CakeSpy Featured in a Brazilian Newspaper!

Totally sweet! I'm big in Brazil...well, my artwork is, anyhow! Last week an art director emailed me and asked if he could use my artwork from the Coconut French Toast With Bananas Foster recipe for his article, and I said "si!". Now, if only I could only figure out what the article said.

A link to a bigger image of the article can be found here; the paper is online here.

This is a bit of sweetness that someone brought to me! Annabelle, 7 year old daughter of Sarah (who participated in the Bakesale for Japan and has a great blog called The Sated Palate), was so inspired by my cupcake-unicorn card that she did her own version. How sweet! Too bad I have to sue her for copyright infringement now.

This is a little anonymous note I left at the library, in the pages of a book that struck my fancy (maybe you'll be the next to take it out?). The question is unimportant: the answer, when it comes to doughnuts, is always Oh, yes.

This is an oldie but sweetie: a cupcake created from the light of a laser pointer! This was done by artist buddy Rakka.

Today's dose of sweetness isn't by me, but by uber-talented UK-based animator Helen Windle. I dare you to watch the above video (or any of these) without smiling. Check out her website, too.
